However, finding the right balance between work and home life can be a challenge, but by remembering a few small tips, you too can embrace the warmth of an Oodie, and continue to keep your pets company while getting your work done, keeping sane, and having the flexibility to get the most out of the hours available to you in a way that works for you…
Set Up A Dedicated Workspace
Creating a designated workspace is probably the most important piece of the puzzle for maintaining focus and productivity. I know not everyone is lucky enough to have an extra room in their house or apartment, but you don’t need to always go that far.
Find a quiet corner if you don’t have a spare room where you can set up your home office.
Make sure you have a comfortable chair, a spacious desk, and good lighting. I can’t speak enough to how important a good chair is. That should be your first priority, and the $100 special from Officeworks probably won’t cut it. Spend some extra cash if you can. Your back will thank you later…
Stick to a Routine:
While the allure of lounging in your PJ’s all day is tempting, establishing a solid routine is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Wake up at a consistent time, get dressed (even if it’s just switching from your PJ’s into a pair of trackies), and establish regular working hours.
The psychology behind maintaining regular hours is undisputed. Humans are creatures of habit, so build healthy habits around work hours, and that also means NOT always going straight to your computer when the alarm goes off, or working later every day because your desk is ‘right there’. Make sure you’ve got LIFE in your work/life balance.
Take Breaks and Move:
It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re engrossed in your work.
Remember to take regular breaks to stretch your legs, rest your eyes, and recharge. Schedule short walks or stretching exercises to keep your body active and your mind refreshed. You’ll find that these breaks boost your creativity and overall well-being.
Sometimes, ‘taking a break’ is as simple as drinking a cup of tea in a sunny room. Short mental breaks go a very long way.
Communicate and Collaborate:
Working remotely doesn’t mean you’re on an island by yourself. Stay connected with your colleagues with regular communication. Make use of tools available to you like video calls, instant messaging or in the Microsoft Modern Work world, Viva Engage.
By keeping the lines of communication open, you can maintain the spirit of teamwork, and avoid feelings of isolation.
Also, (in balance…) there’s no harm in calling a colleague and just having a chat for 10 minutes. We all did it in the office, there’s no reason things should be different now!
Minimise Distractions:
While working from home offers endless perks upto and including the ability to raid the pantry all day long, walk around in your uggs, and listen to the music YOU want, it can also present distractions, like household chores, family members, or the lure of social media and doom-scrolling.
To combat these distractions, establish boundaries and communicate your work schedule to those around you. It might even be something as simple (which I’ve implemented and love) as when my door is closed, I’m focusing or in a meeting… That’s my at-home DND mode, and it works. Except for the dog. He doesn’t seem to care…
Dress for Success (Even at Home!):
Contrary to me sprucing the ability to wear an oldie and trackies all day long, While it may be tempting to stay in your favourite ‘indoor clothes’ all day, changing into comfortable yet presentable clothes can have an incredibly positive impact on your mindset and productivity. It goes back to building habits, and programming your brain differently.
I’m not saying to iron a shirt every morning, but clean clothes are a must. My wardrobe of choice is a selection of 3 different pair of comfy jeans, and a variety of plain t-shirts or jumpers, depending on the weather and what my day looks like.
Don’t overcook it, but do your best to look like you’re going to work!
Find Your Work-Life Balance:
One of the greatest advantages of working from home is the ability to integrate work and personal life seamlessly. However, it’s important to draw clear boundaries between the two.
Define specific work hours where possible and try to resist the urge to work beyond them.
Remember to make time for yourself, indulge in hobbies, and spend quality time with loved ones. A healthy work-life balance is key to long-term success and happiness.
Working from home can be an incredibly rewarding experience if approached with the right mindset and practices.
By creating a dedicated workspace, establishing a routine, embracing the technology you have available to you, and balancing work with personal life, you can make the most of this journey.
